After dinner and getting Jack settled with his toys, Kat decided to take a look at her email. There wasn’t anything too exciting in it -- a few emails from Jack’s school about the start of the year and some notes from Van’s assistant on the next publication dates. She was just about to close her laptop when she saw a new email pop up in her inbox. There was no subject line. She clicked on it and a video started to run. She squinted for a minute and then cried out, “Van! Van!”
Van, who had been in the garage looking for a wrench to fix the faucet in the bathroom came running. “What’s the matter? Are you okay?”
All Kat could do was point. The video of her naked in her own shower ran over and over again, the same scenes repeating without stopping.
Van sat down in front of the screen. “The message says, ‘Keep your nose out of our business.’”
Kat watched Van’s color change. He didn’t say anything and calmly put the wrench on the table. Kat followed him. He walked up the steps to the bathroom and quickly found the cameras that had been placed there. Before he disconnected the last one, he glared into it and gave it the finger.
“I’m going to call in a favor for a sweep.” Van sent a text and a minute later there was a reply. “He will be here within the hour.” Van finally took a minute to look at Kat. “We need to let Hollister and Traldent know about this. You could be in danger. That was a clear signal to back off.”
The next hour was a blur. Before Kat could even process what had happened, TJ Weiss, the SEAL that had pulled her out of the Humvee in Afghanistan was at her house. He had bought a new house close to her and he and Van had become friends after the Apex incident. He was also a long-time friend, and at one time, more than that.
Kat, still rattled from the threat, was afraid to answer the door when it rang. Van nodded, letting her know that it was okay. “What are you doing here?” Kat wrapped her arms around TJ’s neck. He used one hand to give her a bit of a hug. He was holding a bag of equipment with the other.
“I heard you might need an exterminator.” TJ had a warped sense of humor, typical of many of the SEALs.
“That’s one way to put it,” Kat said, feeling herself relax.
As Van shook TJs hand and they moved into the house to discuss the problem, Kat felt her body begin to relax a bit. Seeing herself naked in the shower felt so violating, but she knew that Van and TJ would take care of the problem and protect her and Jack at the same time. She went back into the kitchen to start a pot of coffee.
